sending art

Hi Pam,
Thanks for your reply so soon. I hope you had a good trip in NY. My brother says it's 30f...that's cold. I also heard my co worker's daughter got mugged walking home one night. She's been in New York for a long time now and it her first. Anyway, I have been researching for the best way to send the art to you. They are in glass with metal frames. The size is about 11"x17" or smaller. I think I will use US Postal or UPS. Let me know if there is a better way.
-Duc

P.S. BTW I'm so glad you are involved in the Gallery!!

Hi Pam,
I've found a good place to package the photographs. The Packaging Store will have the cardboard box with custom foam fit the frames. It's a good price $140 for ten pieces shipped as five piece bundle. I am assuming you would like to receive the white origami series. This Saturday I will send them to the Engima gallery address.

Thanks, Duc. I'll contact you upon arrival of your package and will send images of the installation. Also, please know that it is a privilege to work with you, I do think you have an extraordinary talent.

Hope you are having a nice and safe trip in NY. I plan to send you my origami series of photographs to the Gallery Address in Essex VT.
I'll also update my website and send you my slides of new paintings that I've been working on since last summer. They are small 14 x 17 inches, about nine paintings.

Hi Duc -

If you're interested, I would like to have work right away, as little or as much as you want to send, perhaps your origami images. Then in the summer or early fall we can do a solo exhibition of new work or whatever you choose. Let me know if this works for you. I'm in NYC and will be back Monday, so I'll respond as soon as I return. Meanwhile, I'll keep my eyes open for any opportunities for you in the city.

Pam

Hi Pam, I'm doing well. It's good to hear from you. The gallery is impressive. I love the space and the light! I would like to show my work either ongoing or an exhibition.

Well we know that Oregon, New York and other intelligent states choose Kerry. It's the older population who fears terroism and believe in the old values, the so call Evangelicals. Running on a campaign that promise security against Terroist and creating fear in the people works. Some one I heard on the radio compared this to George Orwell's 1984. He quoted a passage which I can't remember but it was something about going to war with Eurasia and fighting them just to keep a society going, functioning and the reason for the war was long forgotten.

my friend wrote this:

PS. Why is it that intelligent people are in the minority in this
country?
How is it that our President can sit back holier-than-thou on his
pro-life
laurels, yet boast an execution record as Governor of TX that is
higher than
any other Governor in US history? And how can he claim to support
less
government and more power to the people, yet at the same time bolster
an
Administration's efforts to ban marriage between two people who love
each
other just because it doesn't gel with his religious ideals? Zealot
bastard. Are we all blind, people?!? Ok, I'm done... Who wants to
go get a
drink tonight?

Is there a different degree of being a pro life? Can you be for life but punish those criminals by taking away their lives? I belive yes. you can be pro life because it's a new life with a potential for good. Where as a criminals life has proven to be evil. However, do we still have the right to take away that crimnal's life? These questions can lead to dangerous meditations. What if there is a method to find out that a new life had criminal tendencies in their genes? Does the people in power have the right to execute a potential life because the society believes that the life has potential for crimes. this raises the question that is life of a criminal nurtured or nature. The environment certainly has a factor.

well said!! i agree 100% with what he said about for lawyer!! Althought I only meet with my lawyer two times.
I email and fax to her a lot and talk to her or her assistant. She is an immigration lawyer. Althought I have not checked out her records of past k-1 cases. How do I go about checking this?? Just curious. I trust her work.
I figure it takes about three months to five and i would be paying her $500 over that period of time. My fiance was rejected with tourist visa and I don't want her to go through that experience again. I felt bad enough. "

Elfriede Jelinek Homepage

Our founding fathers took examples from Ancient Greek's Democratic society but ignored that fact that Ancient Greek is an openly gay society. Our founding father's Puritanism causes them to over look this major fact. Now this whole issue of same sex marriage and morality is being question. The Ancient Greek society believed heavily in Ethics and Morality. Aristotle defined Ethics. The problem is that marriage is a church institution and it is also a state institution. It very difficult to have separation of church and state in this matter. Most laws are deriving to protect the moral majority. We as a society determine what is moral and legal. It’s interesting that as a society we have not evolved rather we have regressed. The Ancient Greeks were a functioning society of free sexual unions. We still up hold the words that our founding fathers wrote long ago. Some have said that the decline of Roman and Ancient Greek civilization was due to the gay life style. The problem is in a Democratic society where the people make up their own choice and are allow pursuing their happiness the conservatives still bring up the words of our founding father. We see and borrow heavily from the Ancient Greek's model of Democracy but choose to ignore that it was an openly gay society. We choose to ignore a major facet of the Democracy, the Republic. The state should not have a say in people's private affairs. It does for economy reasons. Because marriage is both a religious and state affair it is difficult to sort through. The constitution says we are allow the pursuit of happiness but it also says that this happiness is defined by the state...it says that this happiness is one man and one woman at the scared blessed union. We know that homosexuality has been around for ages, even in the ancient Greece. It was in this puritanical state that is viewed as abnormal. Even the early Christianities who were up rising against the Romans saw this perversion and rebel against it. Perhaps this was why they fought the Romans and the Greeks because of the homosexuality....

Art Access: RC GALLERY

I already did on the St. Helens hike. It was horrible weather, freezing rain, and a whiteout. This young blonde Anna Kournikova type came sprinting up the rocks past us. All she had on was hot shorts and a tight white T-shirt. It was pouring rain so it was like a wet t-shirt contest. We all just kind of stopped and stared. It was something else, man.

art thief

The gallery was broken into last night. It doesn't look like anything
was taken - because nobody understands our art.
Altho, all of Aaron's pieces in the backspace are not there. I don't
know if they have been taken down or stolen.
This all reminds me of the time I had a show at WSU while in school.
Before the show was over I sneaked into the gallery with my brother
(we
had to scale a wall and dress in black while drinking beers) and
stole
all my art back. I thought it would get great attention. But nobody
noticed, but I didn't really complain.
I'm a dumb-ass.
I normally would just write this in the book - but, I figure its
kinda
"special". Maybe we can spread the word..."Do you hear
Gallery 114 was
broken into last night!"
"Holy fucking shit!"
"That's right, Holy fucking shit"

All the mailboxes were broken into as well. I talked to Tom Walsh
(our
building manager?) and he said that there is a "rash" of
check thieves
blanketing the city. Apparently they steal checks and use the
electronic check numbers to buy stuff on ebay or other internet
related
money laundering endeavors.

The door will be fixed today.

So, I do believe Paul was sitting yesterday. Paul doesn't have a
computer or email so I will call him to see if he left any checks in
the out going gallery 114 mailbox. Highly unlikely.

Its pretty cool - I can pick up a wireless internet signal on my
laptop
down here in the gallery basement. I think its coming from Starbucks.
Actually, I figured out a way to "tap" into Starbuck's
corporate
network and "steal" a internet signal for us.
Just one more thing that the Odanrot selflessly and tirelessly
contributes to the community of 114.

In return for my efforts I DEMAND someone bring my a rum and tonic.

with a lime.
maybe you should bring 13 of them.
and a plan ticket to mexico.

peace,
rot

Raymond Carver

Aren't those two stories great? Another of my favorites of his is "Fever." It really reminded me of my breakup with my ex-girlfriend, the character of the wife in the story made me think of Emily. It was cathartic for me to read it.
I will loan you my anthology of his next time I see you. I love his characters and what he writes about, plus his style is so cool. He comes from the Hemingway school of writing: Never use three words when one will do. That's why I love Hemingway and Carver, and hate Woolf and Proust.
I tried to do a search on the net for the performance but didn't find much info. It will have been on for quite a while so we should be able to get in. Hopefully it will not be sold out. Maybe we can meet at the theater at about 6:45 and just take our chances. That is what Carver would do, he wouldn't try any of this fandango.com BS. Of course, he'd also show up drunk....
Anyway let me know if that sounds like a plan.

Google

It was a mind-blowing epic, a literary tour de force! I especially love the part where Carver dressed up as Trojan man and fought Achilles and his gay lover. And I thought he was just a short story writer!
...ha ha, yeah I still think we lived the perfect Raymond Carver story there. I mean, it had it all: dingy downtown Portland theater, turned away at the door, wandering off down the streets after the two lesbians, standing in line listening to the homeless people play the blues, culminating in a dimly lit movie, lots of strangers, and cheap pizza and beer. He would have been proud.

Now and Zen show review

They thought the show now and Zen was really elegant!! I was very happy!!
Lots of bigwig local business people stop by...the musician was nice...we chatted about the Japanese flute and he plays guitar. The flute is made from bamboo stalk at the root edge...he play music to the art pieces. Inside of the flute is painted with red lacquer. Some one had to apply the red lacquer paint with a special tool. He was teaching English in Japan. One of his Japanese students gave it to him as a present from his grand father. It’s impressive instrument. His nails are long for picking the guitar.

I'm getting a guitar from eBay
it's an old Arian parlor guitar from the early 1900s for $155. I missed out on a Harmony guitar for $12 with a missing tuning peg. Also there's a 30 old vintage guild for under $100. Oh my...the guy at guitar center said someone bought an old base guitar at goodwill for $100 it turn out to be a $3,000. guitar!!

Owners Opinion: Panasonic DMC-FZ10: nippa: Digital Photography Review

After a lot of research I decided to order the fz10 from Ritz on eBay. It's being delivered in a few days. I almost got the LC5. I am waiting for the LC1 to come down in price. My Hasselblad just arrive today. Suddenly I began to take more pictures now...even with a film camera. I have a Contax G1 and Nikon F4. I've been reading this site a lot lately and it has influenced my choice of digital camera. I've seen some very beautiful picture from the photographer Barta on www.usefilm.com He uses LC5 and the pictures are beautiful even though it's very small. The sky and blue hues are lovely. I've also read the www.washingtonpost.com article by Van Riper. He likes the Fz1 better then the fz10 because of the Imagine stabilizer. I would only get the fz1 if it was upgrade to and fz2. But the Clerk at Kitz camera said that firmware upgrades voids the manufacture's warrantees. I almost order fz2 over seas but didn't. The clerk really emphasized that fz1 can't be print to an 8x10. So there you have it...that's how I end up with the fz10. I was testing it out at the Kitz store and took two pictures of a girl that I wanted so bad to keep these pictures. I wanted to steal the 16 SD card. The next day I came back and the picture was deleted.

Monk (yellow robe)
The inspiration for Monk (yellow robe) came from attending the Kwan Yin temple near North East Glisan. The image of the yellow robe monk stayed with me after many prayer sessions. I try to recreate this vision inside the studio. I started with an acrylic layer to sketch out the shape because it was quick and easy, the medium allows me to work right away. It was meant to be just a sketch but a year later I went back to this painting and apply several layers of oil and abstract the image further to extend beyond the reality and into another element. The small paintings are precious and most of them are done quickly and spontaneously but always going back to further improved upon after a time.

'Duc Ly's paintings are textured abstracts that hint at Asian or perhaps Extraterrestrial Landscapes. His oil painted on Mylar is an exquisite vision of the moon surrounded by shapes that could be alien pictographs or characters from an exotic tongue.'

shape of loss

I met with Stephen; and I really liked his project. Do you know of others
I might try for the show? I am thinking one or two more photographers.
Also, if Stephen decides to participate I think the title of his work might
be a wonderful starting point for the title of the show "The Shape of
Loss". So maybe the show is driven more by loss and memory's role than just
a general idea about memory? This is what I am thinking now. So if you have
any names please pass them onto me. Another issue is how much space will
you use for display of your work? Let me know. Thanks Duc!

Oh I'm glad you meet with him. I was going to send him what I wrote up quickly just to brief him about our wonderful and spontaneous discussion of memory and art work. So I hope you explained it to him and will be great if he participate. What's holding him up?? I couldn't get him to display for the Now and Zen show. He is being coy?? Ah yes I remember the title and I like this shape of loss.
I only saw a few images of large statues from this one photographer but I don't know yet. Let me think about this and it will come to me soon.
You said we can have 8-10 pieces each?? My frames will be 11 x 17 ish...

jam

Hey Duc,
I am hoping to get the guitar today. Saturday I went to my old teacher "The Bridal Shop Guy", ha ha, he has a classical guitar shop in there now too. I played 2 guitars I really liked, they are handmade by Michael J. Danielson, a guitarmaker in Richland, WA. One was spruce for 700 bucks and the other cedar for 1500. He said he'd throw in a free hardshell case too. The 1500 dollar one is maybe a hair better sounding than the 700 dollar one, but if it is still available tonight I am going to get the 700 dollar one. I can't justify paying twice the price for maybe 5 percent difference. And at another store they said spruce gets better with age while cedar stays about the same, so it could even out.
I also went to The Guitar Center in Clackamas and played some used 1,500 dollar guitars. Pretty sweet but not any better. I played one for 4 grand too and it didn't sound hardly any better than the others. I checked out Pioneer Music co. yesterday downtown and they had some cool ones but nothing that great.
So I'm going back to that weird bridal shop in Miwaukie today and hopefully will get the 700 dollar one. I'll let you know if I do.
Yeah dude, we will have to jam! Maybe the weekend after this? I am going home for Mother's Day weekend. That CD sounds great, I would love to borrow it from you sometime. I love the sound of Di meola's playing. I was going to take my sister to see Dan Balmer last night but she was too tired.

north view

just woke.
Cool!!
What happen was that we had a conversation about artwork. She wanted to take this old suite case to the goodwill store but it had trigger so much memories that she could not part with but not willing to face it head on either. So the suitcase because this marble thing, an art object. To make a story short, I thought about my suitcase too and objects that I held on for a long time. So the photographs for me is a journey back to the memories I had as a kid making origami boats. Recently I've started to be more direct about this and made boat origami for photographs. I thought that your images have feeling of reaching towards the past and to me they are about journeys. There are many levels of interpretation of the marble suitcase, which I think your photographs do too. It is ironic that the suitcase is heavy as stones. It illustrates the cliché of the emotional baggage, which weighs on every one. She thought that it was ironic that my photographs of the paper boat can't really traverse in water. I thought your photographs would add an element of the river into this journey, memory theme. Or how one would wash in the Mythical river of Lethe [?] to forget. We were working in two very different spectrum of material hardness to express the same ideas. Anyhow, I think this is how she decided to select the theme for the show. Plus I like the writing that accompanies the photographs of your River Series. So try to work this in somehow.

April 15, 2004

Hi Duc,

I just wanted to touch base with you about the possibility of a photography
show at PCC. I am interested in exhibiting your work and perhaps the work
of 3 other artists. It would be really cool to include people whose work
somehow uses photography as a way of conjuring up the past in order to
grasp experience. Do you know of anyone whose work you think would fit this
idea? Let me know. The show would be in Fall 2004, probably November to
December.

Marie

P.S. Thanks for the dinner meeting; I enjoyed talking with you.

Hi Marie,

So glad to hear from you too. I enjoy the conversation and it really got me thinking. I'm excited and looking forward to the PCC Show. I can think of Stephen Miller. He began photographing the river place where his brother drowned...it's a very sad but also therapeutic project for him. I'll make some query into this and let you know. I'll contact him about this to see if he's willing to show this work.

I went to see Catherine Opie's Surfers over the weekend. I liked some of the
pictures of the surfers taken very far away, so the surfers look very small
in the vast ocean that blends into the foggy/cloudy sky. I looked at some of
her other photos in a book of her work that was at the gallery and saw that
she did something in the same vein with houses and snow. Pretty cool.

There were some other interesting exhibits that I'll have to tell you more
about.

sivak

Diner with Maria Sivak. We talked about art, inspiration and process. During the dinner with Maira: boat journey metaphor suite case as metaphor. She believe an object has the power to contain memory. she found a suite case one day. she was going to give it away to good will but found that she could not. she put it in the closet.
god...why is it so slow to write about this wonderful conversation. i wish that i had record this. i want to buy an mic for my minidisc.
She got me to think more about my project. i casual made origami abstract piece which i kept with me for a long time...then i photographed it one day out of the need to tinker. and now begins an obssession with the object.

I saw this sculpture who made a long boat and then set a carcass of a rib of an animal on it.

SEG APARTMENT BLOCK REMISE

back

VIENNA, AUSTRIA (1994-2000)

The project establishes a counterpart to the conventional Vienna housing blocks. The closed building block is broken up and rearranged in an open and differentiated building volume. In order to keep the density of the building block the cut out volumes create a rooftop landscape. This creates open spaces, like air pockets in the structure, which provide for common spaces, public and semi-public spaces and private terraces and gardens. The majority of the apartments are maisonettes with a two story living room and a glass facade.

Charles Wright
March 29, 2004
Charles Wright is the author of more than a dozen volumes of poetry. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Book Critic's Circle Award for Black Zodiac (1998) and the National Book Award for Country Music: Selected Early Poems (1983). His poems crystallize the space between memory and imagination. Critic David Penn has said Wright's poems bring "a sense of poem-making that's as exquisite as a blueprint by Taniguchi or a castle made of sand." Wright's poetry, whether drawing from the experiences of his rural Tennessee youth or his years studying Buddhism, steadily works towards transcendence and transformation. Perhaps poet Donald Justice puts it the most succinctly, "A Wright poem is an expedition into the territory of the beautiful."
His books include Buffalo Yoga (2004); A Short History of the Shadow (2002); Negative Blue (2000); Appalachia (1998); The World of the Ten Thousand Things: Poems 1980-1990; Zone Journals (1988); Hard Freight (1973); two volumes of criticism; and an award-winning translation of Eugenio Montale's The Storm and Other Poems (1978). He teaches at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.

fashion nostalgia

I used to own a pair of Martinique green pants. when I traveled to Hungary or Poland I bought byblos blue v neck sweater. I have a white soft cottonfield sweater that I like and am wearing it today. I found a bottle of Byblos collonge in a cheap department store, t.j max i think.

Hi Yeah, that was good writing. My writing's going fine. At least I'm making
the effort. Watched In the Mood for Love last night by Wong Kar Wai. It was
beautifully shot. Made me think of smoke--how smoke conjures up certain
moods. So I wrote some stuff about that before I went to sleep, but didn't
write much since it was very late.

Went to Kells to look around. enormous crowds. A cover band does U2 songs in a large plastic tent.
We walked all over the city. Ended with a small meal and soft guitar/sax jazz at Brassarie Monmarte. He plays a Gibson. We all had sea food Bisque. I had a Pilsner Urqule.

I didn't sleep right away and read.

happy st. paddy's

Oh I'm Hungarian don't you know....hehe
I would make the time to have lunch!!
Too bad you are moving out of Oregon!!
Okay Let me know about it when you come by...I owe you lunch at least. If you are still interest in the Gate painting and can do $600 just for you.
My bro said it snow in NY yesterday.
I'm putting together a show as a curator for the Gresham Art committee. The show is call Now and Zen. Just bussy entering shows. You are such a cool Art Executive Director. What do you plan to do now?? What about Chris??
You must having a great St. Paddy's. It's so sunny here in Portland now.

-hope to see you soon!

I'm so sorry for my delayed response. I was swamped with getting my
replacement trained and then spent some time in New York with my sister.
Just got back last week.

It was great seeing you. How are things in your world of art? I'm thinking
I'll be in Portland within the next few weeks, and it would be nice to have
lunch, if you had the time.

I'm actually considering between Portland and Denver for my June move away
from Roseburg. I love Portland, but family is in Denver... Decisions,
decisions...

Hey, since you're Irish, are you drinking Guinness and celebrating St.
Patrick's day?

Take care, so great to hear from you.

now and zen show update

March 16, 2004 Tuesday

Dear All Participating Artists,

Because of the overwhelming response, I've made an executive decision to limit two works per artist, which reflects the restraint nature of Zen, (and because oddly enough there are two simple words in the title of our show). I thought this would be an interesting criteria, the Now which expresses the immediacy of moment the present and the Zen, an indescribable word which I hope all of our art works will not so much as try to reflect this but just be. I've tried to answer questions about the nature of the show and I find it hard to express this in words. So hopefully being limited to two works which vaguely express the nature ‘Now and Zen’ should suffice. The works that I have chosen did not really require much thought and mainly came by as I thought about these art works that keeps coming back to my mind or through coincidences that I came to discover your works! Strangely this has defined the work that I now want to pursue. Putting together a show of this nature has influenced me greatly.

beware the Ides of March

Monday

oregon city parks and recs

I just wanted to let you all know that the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee is recommending that the City Commission approve the Carnegie Center Strategic Plan, with a few minor changes. I have attached a redline copy of the plan that highlights the changes.

The Strategic Plan is on the City Commission agenda for March 17. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM. The Plan is roughly the 4th or 5th item on the agenda. There are a couple of presentations and a public hearing regarding a proposed zone change before it, so it is difficult to know what time it will come up. If you wish to attend the meeting to comment on the Plan or just witness the proceedings, please come by.

Once action has been taken on the Plan we will convene our group again to plan for its implementation. Thanks for all of your help to this point.

gallery santa fe

Hi Pam,

Yes i would have to agree. I like the Scottsdale gallery and the work of Tasha Ostrander and Perla krauze. Tasha is a photographer and painter. I just think there is something special about the two cross disciplines, where one work affects the other. I like Tasha's color and forms.
This month i am exhibiting in the back space of Gallery 114. www.gallery114.com Paul Dalquist is in the front space. I got to meet a young guy from Benham Gallery. He came down to check out the work because Paul is represented by Benham. I talk to him a bit.
I would like to get into Chiaroscuro Gallery.

annah

Hi Duc, here are the updates. Mine is mixed media, no oil. I am about to move all my work into a storage unit instead of my studio. I'm not going to keep the studio anymore for a variety of resons. Did you know which other painting you wanted or do you only want the Backbone that you put on the Excel sheet?. Let me know and I can put some aside so they will be easily reached when the time comes. They won't be hard to reach in any case, but I just wanted to know.
Hope you're well.
Take care / Annah

chased by the light

I had a nice morning jog and watch the girl's soccer game for a bit.
I read 'Talented Mr. Ripley and remember about my own travels. In the backyard is so sunny and warm. I napped. it was wonderful.

I saw a special t.v. program about a photographer who travel in the wilderness near his home in the Mid-west and he shot only one photograph for one day for ninety days.

dream of lip

February 23, 2004

I had a dream that some one was offering me food with incense. Then when I took a drink from the bottle I cut my lips. We were at a dormitory.
I was walking home from a dream and there was a flood. The water came up to my knees. There was snow and ice but I was not cold. There are people around me. The small whales are chasing the people into the shore. My journal got wet.

Last night I talked to Ninka on the phone until I fell asleep. It was nice.

We love this band!! I'm listening to the live recored tracks from various concerts. I can play some of the songs on my guitar. I hook the cord to my miniDisc and recored the whole concert at The Electric Factory, Phillidelphia, PA.

Bruno wrote a paper which said the universe is infinite. He is a dominican monk. The Inquisitions burned him. I first heard of him in Paul Auster's 'Moon Palace'. Paul's character shared a passion for obscure works of literature. Bruno existed in the time of Galileo. Galileo had the patronage of Cosimo Medici.
