why i am

okay....however...i'm the oldest boy therefore i was picked to leave the country. as the oldest boy, i was spoiled. my family worry about the drafts...that's when they take little boys to make them men in armies...
My father pay our uncle to take us. I quickly learn how cruel he was to my aunt....my fatther's sister. I quickly learn that the best family you have is your flesh and blood
really....so we sit like animals....because there is no room on the small boat for everyone
my sister and i climbed into the cyclo during the hour of after midnight or very early morning....when no one was around.
I still remember the red bag of clothes and my mother sending me off....she told people that we were to visit relatives in the south
we rode off in the dark. our vehicle cover in a dark cloth
we had a day in the south to wait....the boat was getting fuel and provisions for the trips...everyone was excited...as if it was a cruise.... it was glamous to be leaving
i don't remember seeing my father telling me goodbye that night
but i do remember seeing him at the tail end of the boat as we drifted off
....the can smell the diesal fuel of the boat
he was handing my sister some dry food and instructing her on the trip
what medicine to take to keep us alive
to keep us asleep because there will be no food for days
not much to have
it was the last time we saw him until four or five years later.
sometimes i dream of him standing at the end of the boat....waving goodbye
we took out first steps on the wooden plank into the boat.
later when i see pictures of Noah's arc...i understand what it feels like to walk into a boat...in the hot afternoon of the delta
okay your turn now

I'm glad you decided to join 114 - everyone loved your work
immediately. There's no paperwork - you just need to sign up to sit
as soon as possible and have someone explain how to do stuff like
keys, garbage, lights, locks, etc. and come to the next meeting which
should be sunday, nov.30 at 5:00.

I only know one artist in Lancaster. She does traditional stuff like flowers.

See you soon.
Gini
p.s. I'm 40 not 50. I just had my birthday so I'm very sensitive
about these things.
This is my Christmas list:

Mario Kart Double Dash!!
I want this game so bad!

Finding Nemo (On DVD)

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Widescreen edition DVD)

one box of some holiday Oreos (And an Apple or carrot)

Holes (on DVD)

Optional: Super Smash Brothers Player's guide.
Yo kids!
So we need to have the postcard ready to go by noon tomorrow.
Wednesday. 12/10/03
They will be done the following Wednesday. 12/17/03

The price is going to be $149 for 1000.
or $298 for 2000
the gallery usually prints out 1000.
I think we should just run 1000 also.
so that's $37.25 each.
Hey Duc,
Kurt here. Matthew and I are going to get together to work on a mailer card for the January New Members show and need to know if you are certain you will be participating so we can put your name on the card, and, frankly, see if you'd be interested in contributing to printing costs, which are 150$ per thousand. It equals about 37.50$ for 250 cards to use as you see fit. If I don't get an email reply I'll try your cell phone this evening.
Best,
Kurt
It was truly a pleasure meeting you. I go downstairs every day and stare at
one of your paintings while drinking my coffee... Your work is gorgeous and
is inspiring to me. Glad your presence is here.

Andria will call you in the near future to discuss how to get your work back
to you. No sales yet, but one person in town has displayed an interest...
Will keep you updated. Regardless, a lot of people have come to have a look,
so you're getting quite a bit of exposure.

Hope you're doing well and please keep in touch.

S

your new art today

"Matthew and all others...
I beg to use 'Your New art Today' even if it's kind of wonky it avoids the
instant eyes glazing over thing that 'new members show' does to me. If no
one else agrees, and I doubt there will be any time at this point anyway,
that's cool, the card looks stupendous anyway. All three layouts looked
great, so take your pick, i say...
Kurt"

shaw

Hi Shaw,

Good to hear from you. I'll be sending you another electronic file of the postcard.
I'll will be exhibiting works of oil on canvas. The work is abstract.
I have been to An Artist Residency in Hungary 2001.
I'll have an exhibition of Photographs in CameraWorks Gallery - Peterson Hall, NW Northrup.

cameo cafe

Day light savings time. I got up so early because I forgot it was day light savings time. I had a breakfast appointment with monica. I was suppose to meet her at pho houng at nine. It’s closed when I got there that’s when I knew I made a mistake. Monica suggested we go to cameo. It’s a cafĂ© run by several asian women. They are on sandy blvd. I could not understand the woman who was serving us. Another woman has colorful tattoos encircling her arms. They make pancakes that are bigger then the platter. Maple comes in a plastic jug. I kept pouring it on thick. Monica asked for a dish because there was a huge dollope of butter on her French toasts.

Monday, October 13, 2003

I thought that i would write only about what i did on sundays.

I brought my framed photographs for the doctor to see. I cut myself on the corner of the frame where it is sharp. I asked the receptionist for a band-aid. He laid the specimen on the plastic examination bed. He suggests that we walk out to my car to see the rest of the framework. I lay them out on the parking lot bumper. I looked at the gallery. It’s in the sunken atrium lobby area of a medical school in Northwest. It's apart of Linfield College. It was interesting.

gini chin

October 11, 2003 Saturday
We met at Fong Chong for Dim Sum. She had warmed me that she is not Chinese. Her ex-husband is Chinese. She has streaked blonde hair. I got there early because I thought we were suppose to meet at eleven. I bought a small roasted duck. The man behind the counter chops the duck for me. I brought it back to the table and ate a few pieces because I was so hungry I couldn’t wait. The tea is really good and hot. She came at eleven forty five. Lunch with Gini Chin and David of www.reddoorfilms.com
I mention about Dan Burns when she asked me who else was showing. It turns out the she’s originally from Lancaster. I wanted to photograph the tiny bones in her studio. But maybe next time. She showed me the skull of a dog with hairs still attached. The tray of white bones is neatly arranged. A skull of bat, cat, and dogs. It reminds me of the small kiosk of the watch repairs. Working with gears soaked in cleaning liquid petri dishes. I asked for two objects to photogram.
I asked for Lam’s object too. The object will become a portrait of the artist in form of a photogram. It is a collaborative process. It is my portrait of the artist.
I lived near a sign painter. He painted on metal. The signs are large. He also does portraits for ancestor worship.
I didn’t know the language, so I made these drawings and show it to the welder. They were making a gate for a property near by our studio. The piece is about collaboration between the welders and me. I bought him a bottle of wine to thank him afterwards. The piece is about the communications between two cultures and the bridge of the universal language of drawings, instructional drawings that borders on the technical.
I think I can place some of the Gini chin pieces on pedestals as sculptures.
Gini said that gallery 114 might contact me to have me bring in the work and to talk with me.
We talked about residences. She worried that if the artists are in an unfamiliar environment, how will she work? It forces you to make some thing else.
We talked about Joseph Biels’ work. Gini said that it disturbed her that she found it humorist.

I had dim sum with Gini Chin and her friend. Later, I follow her to her studio. I got to see some of the work that I will be hanging at the 'Now and Zen' show.

I read this artical severl month ago and my brother emailed it to me. I didn't finish it thought.

hehehe...some people don't know what i'm talking about. So you past my thai food quiz. I give you a golden pair of chopstick. Where do you eat these extravagant lunches...and can i join you the next time you go?? :) I'm going for dim sum at fong chong this sat 11:00. I'm meeting an artist for the first time and her boyfriend. Oh yeah I also invited myself to that lunch too. I wanted to check out her studio. I have no shame...
My dear Sweet Olga,

Privet Olga,

Thank you for you sweet email. I'm enchanted by your words as well as your picture. I'm glad you write the date for the last picture. As you look so different for one picture to the next. Althought they are all very nice.

Well, I just got home from work around 6pm. We work the same hours. After diner, I cut some dead flowers from the garden. The fall leaves are gathering.

You are very fortunate to find such a loving lady to take care of you and you repaid her with a warm heart and caring company I think. Your letters always move me to write. Please write more. I have a few friends from Poland and one from Hungary. I write to them and chatt on the computer often. But I like your letters equally. I am trying to learn French from a friend in France. I hope to learn some Russian from you too my dear. I'll write more as I come to think of more to write.

Love,
Bon jour Emilie,

Merci Boucou for your lovely email...tres enchantee. Well I just got home and cut some dead flowers from the garden. And the fall leaves are gathering. What sport did you do? I go jogging sometimes at the track. I do Yoga on Sundays. For diner, I had Zuchini, Cucumber, and Clear Noodles. You know that boy is very lucky to have you as his teacher. As I want to learn French from you.

My encounters with magic

My encounters with magic. When I was born, Mother had the fortuneteller write my fate in a raggedy red book. She kept it awhile in a tin box along with the money. The smell of old money and ink, and tin, and the cold ness of the metal, the weight of it.... that was my fortune's rest. I wore red cloth triangle amulets, my walls where protected with diagrams of tiger. We believed that the somnolent body retired, but the nocturnal soul wondered as mythical beings, tigers to do combats. "pilgrimage....escape my mention.."Michael Stipe. When we were stranded on an island, we consulted the oracle; he used cards as a means of divination. Or how about the time when I crossed the ferry on Vancouver BC, and saw a whale? I bought a book on Magic.

oh the earth smells fresh with the first of new rains. a call from brother in richmond, virginia's NASCAR.

I walk on newly clean carpet and a big empty house. some of the spot is still wet and some of the fibers still hard. all day i've noticed that i needed to take off my shoes so that my feet can enjoy the hard floor of the show rooms in scan design furniture store. all the days of indecisiveness, the newness of the begining which makes me think that here it starts everything in the past doesn't make any sense or doesn't matter so much any more. in this new place it is different it is safe.
