For more than five decades, W.S. Merwin has been an illuminating fixture in the worlds of poetry and translation. His first book, A Mask for Janus (1952), was selected the winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets. In 1971, he won the Pulitzer Prize for The Carrier of Ladders. In the fall of 2004, Merwin was awarded the prestigious Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award in Poetry.
