Poker Tim

Hardley Surton's Web Log of Erroneous History

Hey guys,

Just thought I'd update you briefly on how the world series of poker tournament went. It was being held in the Rio on Friday, so I got there on Thursday afternoon to pick up my chips and register. I won the seat through Full Tilt poker, so I went to their hospitality suite in the Rio hotel, which is just off the strip and where all the WSOP events are held.

Each of the online sites has their own hospitality suite at the Rio, where they have free food and tshirts, caps, etc., plus TVs and lounges where you can hang out at. It's all to promote their site. Outside of each of these hospitality suites, they have hired what looks to be legal hookers to smile at you and hand you a brochure as you enter. I don't know where they get these girls, whether it is Las Vegas high or UNLV, but they must truck them in special because they are all knockouts, but they also dress them up from some kind of Hookers-R-Us store, it is so over the top it is hard to keep a straight face. Some of them stand there and try to sell you clothes like underwear that says, "I lost it on the River," on it, for one example. I didn't know poker had turned into an NC-17 sport, but I guess it did sometime in the last year.

So anyway I went into the suite, and it was crammed with people. Clonie Gowen was there, if you have heard of her, she is a famous pro who is sponsored by Full Tilt. She and everyone else was scarfing down all this free food.

I said I needed to pick up chips for the tournament, and they said, "Oh, you need to talk to Richard." So they yelled for Richard, and this Satanist looking guy came walking up, looking like he was late for an orgy or something. He said, "follow me into this back room." I wasn't thrilled about that, but I wanted my chips so I followed Richard the satanist into the back room. He pops open this briefcase, and luckily had chips in there and not handcuffs and whips. He crosses my name off a list and then gives me 2000 in Rio chips, and tells me to stand in the registration line for the event.

While I am in the line I start to think that all I have to do is just step out of the line and go to the nearest cage, and I can have 2000 in cash. But of course like an idiot I keep standing there and register for the stupid thing.

They had the shorthanded 5k event going on at the time, and I recognized Chris Ferguson and Men Nguyen and a bunch of other famous pros. They all looked kind of like zombies, they'd probably been playing nonstop for the past 3 weeks.

Outside there was another kiosk advertising something or otther, and 4 girls in their hooker gear standing there. Except this time they even had a pole there, and one of them was dancing around it. At 2 in the afternoon. Good grief. Then I looked to my left, and Scott Nguyen is standing there smoking a cigarette and watching, like a total perv. It was, "a typical disgusting display," as a famous sports announcer once yelled. ;-)

I did go to the Bellagio poker room and play, that is a nice place. Very crowded but cool. Phil Laak, the unambomber guy, was playing there and running his mouth. They had a tournament going and that comedian/actor Norm McDonald was playing in it, apparently. Phil Ivey was playing in the back room, probably destroying people, but he looked pretty bored.

Anyway, the tournament kind of blew. They give you 2000 in starting chips, the same as the entry fee. You have a seat assignment, mine was table 119 seat 3, or something like that. They had 2,020 entrants, and first place was something like 860k. It was being televised by ESPN but I never saw any cameras. Only the top 198 actually cashed, so 1800 went home with nothing. It was to take 3 days, with the final table on Sunday.

So anyway I sat down, and there were 10 of us at the table, and the blinds for the first hour started out at 25-25. They had this big clock on the wall like a football scoreborad, counting down from 59:59. When it hit zero then they upped the blinds to 25-50. After the second hour was over there was a 20 minute break, then the blinds went up to 50-100. That is where you really feel pressure, if you haven't increased your chips you only have about 1500 or so left because of the blinds, and now you have to pay 150 just in blinds, every 10 hands. So the 3rd hour is when a lot of people really start getting into all in or fold situations. Whenever you have less than 10x the big blind, you are in trouble.

I was really kind of disappointed, because everyone played pretty much like on the internet-- like idiots. Which is no surprise I guess because most of us qualified on the net. But you could not bluff at all, because they just called everything and were really wild players. So you had to just sit there and hope to catch some cards. It was way more luck than I thought it would be, and that sucked. On the very first hand, a dealer shouted, "seat open, table 231!" so some jackass went bust on the very first hand. Actually 5 people at my table busted out in the very first hour, they were playing so wildly, and they kept bringing over people to replace them.

For the most part I got really bad cards, so outside of the blinds, I only voluntarily played 4 hands before I was knocked out at about 3 o'clock (it started at noon).

On only the third hand of tournament, I was in the small blind (blinds are 25-25). The under the gun (first to act) guy raises it to 75, and everyone folds around to the button, who calls the 75. I looked down at my cards, and I have red queens (QQ). I raised it to 300, because I wanted to end it right there, as I was out of position and did not want to have an ace or king come on the flop. The initial raiser thought for a long time, and then calls the 300. The guy on the button folded. Of course the flop came A-something-something, so the damn ace hit. I had to bet something to represent the ace (act like I had AK), because if I just checked, he would have known I didn't have it, and just bet and take the pot. So I bet half the pot, which was 300. He just called, so I figure he might very well have an ace. I don't want to go out of the tournament on the 3rd hand, so I just checked the turn, he bet big, and I folded. So that sucked, five minutes into the thing I am down to only 1300 chips (from the 2000 starting amount).

From there I got no hands except a J9 on the button which I limped with for 75, missed the flop, and then folded. The second hour they raised the blinds to 25-50, and I got dealt KK. Great! I raised it to 200, and everyone just folded. So I only won 75, big deal.

They broke our table and assigned me to one clear across the convention center after that, then sent us off on 20 minute break.

When they got back they raised the blinds to 50-100, as it was the third hour. Now I am in deep trouble, thanks to the QQ hand and the blinds, I only have 950 left in chips. If you are under 10x the big blind you are in all in or fold mold, and the blinds were now 50-100, so I was there.

At 3 o'clock this guy raised it to 300, and I looked down and had AK of hearts. So I reraised all in for 950. He thought a long time (again), and then called. He had 33. The board cards came all low, I missed, and it was sayonara.

So it kind of sucked.

Anyway it was fun, but I was disappointed at how much pure luck there was. I think if I ever qualify again, I will just fly out there, pick up the chips, cash them in at a cage, and fly home.

Hope you all are doing well, and that I didn't bore you with the Scotty Nguyen hooker story, etc.

jet boat

If you want to cool off this summer check out willamettejet and Multnomah Falls. I highly recommend it. We went there for our Aniversary. We saw two eagles resting near their nest. I was surprised because the boat was very loud. Later, I saw an Osprey around the bend of the river. The Captain of the boat was very entertaining. He told us about the flood of 1996. Most of the house boats were destroyed. I remember being in downtown on first and second and the ground floor was flooded. The cranes float over the Meriwether Condo Project being built. Some of the units are appraised at $560,000. It is of course in the flood zone. People have bought most of the units even before it was finished.

The Captain told us about the Weaverly golf club. A pioneer brought apple seeds to start an Apple Orchard. People laughed at him because Oregon had so many trees already. He planted them anyway. Just in time for the Gold Rush. Food was in high demand by the people coming here to look for gold. He sold an apple for a dollar and made a fortune. He had two sons. Both thought that farming was not of very high socail status. When he died the sons cut down the trees to make a polo field. They went bankrupt two years later.

Sunday we went to Mutnomah Falls. It was very crowded. I took them to Multnomah Falls Sunday and it was so packed. I couldn’t find parking at first but then after one circle around the lot we found one

Zoho Write and Planner GTD

July 10, 2006 Tuesday

I am trying out the new Zoho word processing and web publishing software application:

Hello lexly87,

Welcome to ZohoWriter, your friendly on line word processor!

  • Create, format, & edit documents online with a powerful WYSIWIG editor
  • Access & share your documents from anywhere using just your browser
  • Lock your documents while in shared mode
  • Post to your blogs (Blogger/Typepad/LiveJournal/WordPress) from within Zoho Writer
  • Export your docs in word, pdf, sxw, odt, txt, rtf & html formats
  • Periodic auto-saving of your documents to prevent data loss
  • Spell check, tag your documents for ease of use

And do much more...

I think it's better because it can publish to several blogs of my choosing. In fact, I published this entry through Zoho.

The other exciting Zoho application is the Zoho Planner. Zoho Planner is very similar to Backpack. The major difference is that I can add on unlimited pages without having to pay for it. Here's a sample page of how I use it in the GTD mode.

I have it/redux to thank for showing me Zoho. He explains very well the office 2.0. I didn't even know that delicious is a web 2.0 applications. I'm very ignorant but curious about the web.

Renaissance of internet (Ren of Net)

There's a Renaissance of internet tools to help people organized their experience. Yesterday I tried Flock. In the past few months my discovery of del.icio.us and wordpress has changed the way I'm working with the web. I'm working on a visual chart of how these interfaces relate to each other. It was about a year ago that I got a pro account on flickr. Flickr links to my Sunday Blogspot and Firefox. I have discovered the joys of tags. Tag has proliferated into blogs which has always been a wish list of features I would like for a blog. Tag has invaded the bookmarks of website. The genius of Delicious is that it has taken on organizing people's web browsing with tag and then allows users to share their options and preference with a social group of friends and families and links to other communities. Friendster is very influential in this matter. These tools have humanized the experience of web surfing. It proves that people prefer to interact with each other. We are a social being. We love to communicate. Flock promises to be a social web browser. It’s an exciting times to be blogging. There are so many choices out there and the few have risen to the top. It’s a very democratic playing field where people vote, choices in how they navigate and influence an industry. People can vote for the tops stories in a website call digg. People can subscribe to blogs and other news sites.

Dashes: He is speaking about blog in a meaningful way. Vox is a new way to blog. I'm always in search of a good blog application to use. I like to think of myself as a diarist. I like to be obssessive about journaling and diaries. These are some of the tools that I've found useful in my diary activities. Any Diarist would love to have a nice calendar. My variety is 30boxes.com Another popular site for word processing is Writely.

del.icio.us tool to organize blogger Tags

http://del.icio.us/lexly87/Blogspotart
Subject: tag blog entries. I have three years worth of writings and links, some of it good, most of it bad. My goal is to do a spring cleaning on this site. Please tolerate the mess.
I've decided to use del.icio.us as a tag organization tool for my Blogspot blog. It's hard to find a free blog site which allows me to organize according to tag. If you know of any free blog site which has tag feature to organized blogs, let me know.

Update: I found a blog which does tag and other features which I'll have to explore. One features is the RSS feed to Flickr. wordpress
I've added to my number of growing blogs tests pages. Blogger is still very good to use in conjunction with Flickr. Blogger also allows me to change the dates.

Here's the note that started me thinking.

Entry for June 09, 2006

Ideas #1

Ways of using delicious:

Research my own website and use de.lic.ious to book mark and organized the post on the older blogs that have been buried in Sunday in the days before tagged entries. I'm also using writely use tags to organize and archive my writings on-line. Tag is the next best thing to slice bread. flickr uses tags to organized photos. I used it the other day to decide my slide collection to submit to art competitions. flickr organized all of the images I tagged as nap for New American Paintings and then I can post a link or use the blogger button to show on my blog.

I posted yahoo360 the other day on delicious and found that there were 30 other del.icio.us users also using 360.

Using delicious to research blank paper notebooks that I’m interest in with the design cover.

Idea #2

Since I like the style of my Photography website, why not start another blog using the same design?

I'm inspired by your post too Mike Rohde, I use a pencil because i make mistakes as i mark off the days. I use a red pen to mark off the holidays.

I did not get my hands on the 2006 pocket planner so i'm making one to keep track of personal events of the year so far and the next half year of 2006. then i thought why not go back to 2005 and make a similar book to remember the wonderful events of my life 05'.

Boss Overstuffed Leather High-Back Executive Chair, Black at Office Depot.

christmas present from cindy

ast night we got a 7.5" Kodiak Christmas tree from HomeDepot. It has 500 lights.
The huge box couldn't fit into my small Acura Integra
It's raining. We tore open the box and took out three sections of the trees and stuff them into the back seat of the car. I folded down the back seat rest so as not to scratch the leather. It was comical. We were worse then the Griswalds.

hi fi

My Adventures in Hi Fi Fi:
Date: 2005-10-01, 9:07AM PDT

I've got a nice pair of 2 way classic Advent legacy speakers that need a new home. Nothing wrong with them I've just got too many speakers. The cabinets feature a 10" long throw woofer (just re-foamed and good for another 20+ yrs.) and a 1" tweeter and they sound great. All of the drivers work as they should. The cabinets are black vinyl with a solid pecan wood top. There are a few scratches on the sides and the grills have a few small rub holes up against the grill frame but like I said they sound great and are a great value. Call Joe

well I did and ended up with a BeoVox which is currently blaring out Dave Mathews...
Have you ever heard of Clips horn speaker?? I had the opportunity yesterday. It is a piece of furniture. The cross section is a work of cabinetry.
I answer Joe's Craig's list and drove out to the country to see the Advent Legacy. Joe's house is full of speakers and other junk. His wife puts up with it and he makes decent money from his hobby restoring old speakers that he finds at garage sales. Joe knows his product and has a discerning eye and instinct for the valuable rare collector's items. His wife tells me he has netted profits beyond what he pays for. The speakers had fetched a grand on EBay.

His wife desperately wants him to get rid of his junks. Joe is a musician, a drummer to be exact. He has several pairs of drum kits. One set has a very low serial number.
He took me to another room and left me there to peruse over a cabinet while he look for a pair of BeoVox. I accidentally knocked over a cardboard box full of white socks and other dirty laundries.

I should have brought a camera with me. Joe is very convincing and a good sales man. He doesn’t much like his day job and has reduced his hours to tend audiophile business. I wish I was more productive in my hobbies.

I'm really happy to google tool bar with spell checks. I don't have to use word to check the spelling.

September 29, 2005 Thursday
For diner tonight I made spaghetti. Standards have decided to give us a kitchen aid refrigerator because the whirlpool in Satin is out of stock. I’m happy that mom got the big refrigerator and the new stove. I’m begging to think of topics or subject not to write about. I’m editing before writing.
For lunch, I went to Chen’s Open Kitchen and wrote in my journal while I ate beef low mien.
Idea for writing…. write about visiting my father’s grave. It’s been more then ten years since I visited my father’s gram. It’s the first time I visited. There weren’t many fresh flowers. Because the Chinese are afraid of ghosts. The fresh flowers are of the fresh grave. Here I’m trying not to get into too deep or too intimate. My mind is distracted into thinking about repetitive writings. In one way it’s good to revise and rewrite these ideas. Afternoon office birthday party, Autumn suddenly got more information out of me then I had wanted to reveal. She told me her past boyfriend was 38 years old. They have 16 years apart. Her mother was dating and is still dating some one much younger then she. I found out that they got marry because of her. I told autumn the story of how I came to America.

We have been having very bad luck with the refrigerator. Maybe it's because I married someone born on the 13th. My wife thinks so.
The delivery man was late because he for got his tools.
I took a nap while I waited at home for the delivery truck to arrive.
The refrigerator door is damaged so we will have to get another one and wait another day

cuerpo on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

cuerpo on Flickr - Photo Sharing!: "?The entire mystery of pleasure in a woman?s body lies in the intensity of the pulsation just before the orgasm. Sometimes it is slow, one-two-three, three palpitations which then project a fiery and icy liqueur through the body. If the palpitation is feeble, muted, the pleasure is like a gentler wave. The pocket seed of ecstasy bursts with more or less energy, when it is richest it touches every portion of the body, vibrating through every nerve and cell. If the palpitation is intense, the rhythm and beat of it is slower and the pleasure more lasting. Electric flesh-arrows, a second wave of pleasure falls over the first, a third which touches every nerve end, and now the third like an electric current traversing the body. A rainbow of color strikes the eyelids. A foam of music falls over the ears. It is the gong of the orgasm. There are times when a woman feels her body but lightly played on. Others when it reaches such a climax it seems it can never surpass. So many climaxes. Some caused by tenderness, some by desire, some by a word or an image seen during the day. There are times when the day itself demads a climax, days of which do not end in a climax, when the body is asleep or dreaming other dreams. There are days when the climax is not pleasure but pain, jealousy, terror, anxiety. And there are days when the climax takes place in creation, a white climax. Revolution is another climax. Sainthood another.?

It’s not as bad as one would think…at first I was against it
But when we got there it was not as high as it was in our mind.
Yes it was the crazy polish couple that urged us on.
Nina really wanted to try it and I didn’t want to stop her. I didn’t want to be left out of the experience either.
They got about seven people to go jumping. More girls then guys actually. There was one other couple.
A bunch of people from another group that we didn’t know.
I saw an old man jump so I decided that I would go to it.
The father and his daughter and son jumped. They try to get the mother to jump but she didn’t want to. The daughter didn’t make a sound. We all scream like mad.
Nina jumped before me and I jumped last in the group. I didn’t want to and didn’t decide to jump until the last minute. So for me I didn’t spend so much time fretting about it.
It’s very strange feeling…hard to write about it. It’s similar to an awakening. The first step off into air is amazing really. You don’t hear or see anything for a few seconds and then you see the ground rushing towards you. I closed my eyes then. The ride up because of the bungee bounce is strangest and this happens for two times. We all hang in mid air and stay like that for a few seconds. It’s all very disorientating.
We both decided to do only one jump in our lives and we wouldn’t do it again. But it’s safe because we saw many jumps and it’s not logical that you can fall form the harness. It’s very tight fit.
We talk about it more after the jump and now have an intense shared experience.

because of time constraints I was only able to look at two or three pages of the most current pictures in the pool and my choice was based on that. However, I don't think my choice would have been different. A photographs first impression is pretty strong. Roland Barthes said something to the affect that a photograph has a punch or a punctum as he called it i think. there is something there in the photograph that can reach out to my mind and hit me and this photograph does that for me.

Unbridled versus Restrained on Flickr - Photo Sharing!: "i just drove through a storm yesterday and it was just a small one still very scary...can't imagine the one you described."

This was one horrific storm. I drove through it for roughly 40 miles and there were hundreds if not thousands of strikes during my drive. Lightning was hitting in front of me, to either side, behind me and above me, I honestly thought I might die that night.

Anyway, after what seemed like hours I managed to get out from under the storm. I pulled over in a rest stop and set up. At first I did it hand held, figuring it would be a cool effect. Those didn't look to great, so I set up the tripod.

So, was I lucky? To come out alive, for sure! To get the shot that won? Definitely. But, I was luckiest to get to experience that storm and have the luxury of pointing my camera where ever I pleased and to know I would capture lightning in a bottle.
